Blackheart: Ghost Rider

Blackheart is a powerful demon, the son of the devil himself, able to kill nearly anyone that gets in his way and do so with ease. As in all movies, Blackheart ends up fighting Ghost Rider more than once and finds out that he’s immune to Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare because he lacks a soul. This means that Ghost Rider has NO WAY to defeat Blackheart for good, given his innate power. However, Blackheart’s ENTIRE goal for some reason is to gain a contract with hundreds of souls to boost his power to “surpass his father’s”.

However in doing so he now becomes susceptible to the Penance Stare 100x over (for having so many souls in him) and thus loses. The thing is, he KNOWS this and still does it anyways. His literal goal is to make himself beatable by the one guy trying to stop him and it’s the only way he loses.

Ultron: Avengers – Age of Ultron

Ultron’s been covered pretty well in previous articles, so we know who he is. We also know that due to his internet access and body hopping, that Ultron is literally unbeatable as he’ll always come back. The only way he loses is…well by self sabotage.

First, he decides to make himself super vulnerable by making a ‘perfect’ body and uploading himself into it. This is a process that didn’t need to take place AT ALL before fighting the Avengers. If anything, it makes him too easy to pinpoint and almost keeps him trapped in one place. Also, as seen, if anything goes wrong (and it does), then he’s screwed. Because of this creation (who ends up as Vision), he’s defeated by being burned out of the net and gives the Avengers a super strong member. If he waits until after the fight, and DOESN’T equip the Avengers with a super strong member who can stop his body hopping, he wins. Plain and simple.

To add on to this, he also made the thing in front of the woman he KNOWS can and will read minds in Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff. Her using these powers is part of his plan and he KNOWS they don’t work on him and will work on his new ‘perfect’ body, but still lets her close to the body and lets her read his thoughts.

Ultron never wanted to win.

Voldemort: Harry Potter

Unlike the others, Voldemort was less understanding and knowledgeable of his screw ups, but still he initiated them. Voldemort got Dumbledore killed so he could use the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand in existence. Cool. Unfortunately the way he did it made Harry Potter, his mortal enemy, the true owner of the wand and thus it backfired.

Again he had a good plan when baiting Harry out into the woods, in a plan to become unbeatable by killing the child destined to kill him, but he allows Harry to sacrifice himself and thus not only come back to life, but offer protection to every witch and wizard on the ‘good’ side in the Hogwarts battle.

It’s tough luck, but every time Voldemort tried to improve, he really just further ruined his own plans.

Diamondback: Luke Cage

Diamondback, the final boss of the ballad of Luke Cage, had it made. He had the police ready to shoot Cage on sight and even sold them guns that can hurt and kill the usually-bulletproof man. On top of that, he engineered situations to turn the media against Luke as well. All Diamondback had to do was wait, and Cage would be dealt with.

Unfortunately Diamondback is balls-to-the-walls insane and instead gets a super suit from Hammer and fights Luke one on one, on his terms, AND in the middle of the street. This ruins everything Diamondback worked so hard for, so while it allowed him to go toe to toe with Luke, it was really more of a curse than a blessing.

Killgrave: Jessica Jones

KIllgrave, the evil guy who can command people to do his bidding, one of the most dangerous men on the planet, loses because he becomes too powerful. Yep, you read that right. Due to boosting his powers, Killgrave gets the case of the Ego, or the case of the Hubris and decides to try to command the woman that HATES him, the woman that RESISTED his commands before and he pays for it with his life.

Ironically without the power up (which allows him to affect crowds of people instead of just a few), he wouldn’t have been so cocky, so it’s his need to improve that killed him, just like every other villain on this list.

Famine: Supernatural

Famine, better yet known as one fourth of the Four Horsemann of the Apocalypse and an incredibly powerful being in the Supernatural verse (where the older you are, the more powerful you are) might be one of the worst, if not the worst case of a villain actively killing himself.

Famine is of course, the embodiment of hunger to the nth degree, making people around him become crazed due to cravings. Of course he needs to feed as well, but his diet isn’t specific, keep that in mind, he can feast on any soul and any essence. Thus, his fight with Sam Winchester (hopped up on Demon Blood AKA plot powers with super powers added on top of it) is maybe THE prime example as Famine takes it upon himself to feed on some nearby demons for a likely-not-quite-needed power up.

Of course, Demon Blooded Sam can exorcise demons so doing this actually weakens Famine to Sam, and allows the Winchesters to defeat him. Famine, who by the way was actively tempting Sam to drink demon blood and MOCKS Sam about his powers not working on Famine due to being a Horseman, can only lose by doing this to himself and yet still stupidly goes for the power up. Perhaps a flaw of being the embodiment of hunger.
